MONMOUTH -- With more people moving into town and
longtime residents growing older, neighbors are not as neighborly
as they used to be. A new group in town hopes to change that.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors, formed last December
to foster a sense of community, will focus on youth and elderly issues.
"We've had so many people moving in, it's just
hard to get to know your neighbors," said Julie Sawtelle, a member
of the group. "We're hoping to foster that sense of community
that has been missing, when you used to just be able to run next door
and borrow a cup of sugar."
Sawtelle said the group is seeking new members and
invites people to attend its meeting on Tuesday.
Those who attend are asked to share information
on resources and services available in the area, such as fuel assistance,
transportation services, crisis contacts and companionship for the
elderly.
Barbara Wright said her community group is in the
process of compiling that information.
"We're getting a good response and are looking
for what's out there," Wright said.
Pastor Jackie Brannen said Neighbors Helping Neighbors,
which meets once a month, plans to publish a pamphlet with a listing
of the services.
"We determined Monmouth needs a resource guide
so when folks come to the town or church with various needs we'll
have a list available for them," Brannen said Thursday.
The group, spurred on by the Social Outreach Committee
that serves both the United Church of Monmouth and the East Monmouth
United Methodist Church, wants to hold a senior citizen's day.
The group is also starting a community garden at
the United Church and hopes to provide fresh produce to the church's
food pantry.
"We're looking for any kind of help in that
area," she said. "It has yet to be tilled, but we started
plants in the greenhouse."She said there are about 35 members
in the group."It's important community members come together
and help folks during tough times and share our natural resources
in our love and care and commitment to one another," Brannen
said.
